Mali: Gold production falls and the nation looks for alternatives.

This is the first time in three years that the 60 tonnes mark has not been passed. The reason for this is the drop Gold production in Mali fell sharply in 2024, reaching 51 tonnes against the 58 tonnes forecast. n yields at several mining sites, notably the Morila mine, which is now under state control.

The country’s gold reserves have fallen by 17% in two years, despite an increase in industrial production over the last decade. To limit its dependence on gold, Bamako is banking on economic diversification, in particular by supporting projects to exploit lithium.

The future of the gold sector remains uncertain, especially as Barrick Gold has suspended operations at Loulo-Gounkoto and Fekola, two of the country’s largest deposits, due to tensions with the Malian authorities.
