Cameroon: CCA-Bank turns to Islamic finance

The Cameroonian government has released 6.7 billion FCFA in 2024 to rehabilitate 20 km of roads in Yaoundé and Douala. Many members of parliament, however, deem this budget to be insufficient, given the worrying state of roads in major cities such as Obili and Biyem-Assi.

Addressing the National Assembly, Célestine Ketcha Courtes, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, defended her achievements. She cited rehabilitated roads such as Carrefour Nlongkak-Mballa 2 and Messassi in Yaoundé, while highlighting similar efforts in Douala.

On the ground, however, the deterioration of urban roadways remains a reality, despite footbridges, interlocking paving stones and crisis meetings at the Prime Minister’s office. The mayor of Yaoundé, Luc Messi Atangana, deplores budgetary constraints linked to the Treasury’s single account.

In a context of decentralization, the multiplicity of players – town halls, ministries, cities – makes road governance complex. According to one expert, “until roles are clarified, responsibilities are diluted, and roads continue to deteriorate”.
