Mali: more than 11m tonnes of cereals harvested by 2024-2025
More than eleven million cereals were produced in Mali despite difficult climatic conditions. This resilience was hailed by transitional president Assimi Goïta, who chaired the 15th session of the High Council for Agriculture on May 6th.
Over eleven million tonnes of cereals produced by 2024. This is the performance achieved by Mali’s agricultural sector. These figures were unveiled on May 6 at the 15th session of the High Council for Agriculture, chaired by the Head of State, Assimi Goïta. The transitional president took the opportunity to reiterate his ambition to achieve food self-sufficiency.
This objective is being put to the test, not only by the security crisis, but also by the climate. Last year, deadly floods hit Mali, affecting more than 100,000 farmers. Faced with a sector that employs 80% of the working population, the government is forced to rethink agriculture to make it sustainable and resilient. To achieve this, Mali is focusing on research and new technologies.
17 regions affected and almost 350,000 people affected…the floods also prompted the transitional government to declare a state of national disaster in 2024. The authorities also announced a CFAF 4 billion aid package for affected households.
