Africa: Niger convoys 40 tankers of fuel to Mali
In response to the serious fuel shortage in northern Mali, a convoy of 40 tankers was dispatched from Niger to Mali.
The armies of Niger and Mali joined forces this week to bring a convoy of 40 fuel tankers to Gao, in response to the ongoing fuel shortage in northern Mali. The tankers were driven by the Niger army to the border, then taken over by Malian military forces to Gao.
The initiative was carried out within the framework of security cooperation between the two member countries of the AES, the Alliance of Sahel States. This aid was eagerly awaited, as the crisis that had been going on for several weeks had caused prices at the pump to soar.
This supply could provide some temporary relief for the inhabitants of Gao, who are facing an acute energy crisis, exacerbated by the region’s geographical isolation.
