Apple and Meta sanctioned: Europe strikes against digital giants

Brussels fines Apple and Meta 700 million euros under new Digital Market Regulation.

500 million for Apple, accused of restricting third-party developers’ access to its App Store. And 200 million for Meta, which forced users to choose between giving up all their data… or paying to avoid ads.

The European Commission considers that these practices violate competition and data protection rules. The Objective is to force the American giants to adapt their model to the European market.

These sanctions come at a time of explosive climate between the EU and the United States, in the midst of a trade war. Donald Trump is criticizing European taxes and regulations against American companies, while *customs surcharges of up to 25% are already being imposed on aluminum, steel and automobiles.

Apple cries injustice, Meta denounces favorable treatment for Chinese and European companies. Both groups announce they will appeal.

But with more than 150 billion euros in cumulative profits in 2024, these fines are above all a political signal. And Brussels warns that, in the event of non-compliance, additional penalties will be imposed.
