Cameroon: 112 billion to finally get water flowing in Yaoundé

Cameroon is to obtain a loan of 112.6 billion FCFA from three foreign banks to reconfigure Yaoundé’s drinking water supply system.

Despite the commissioning of the Paepys project in August 2024, water remains scarce in the capital. The cause: a distribution network that is outdated and unsuited to the new infrastructure, notably the Batchenga catchment station.

The financing, validated by three presidential decrees, will be distributed as follows:
47.9 billion FCFA from ING Bank Belgium for lot 1
39.4 billion FCFA from Belfius Bank for lot 2
25.3 billion FCFA from Deutsche Bank for lot 3

The project aims to reorganize the pipes and network, to finally exploit the 485,000 m³ of water/day now available – compared with only 185,000 m³ previously.

The work was expected to start as early as 2024, but to date, no launch date has been confirmed. According to the Ministry of Water, the studies are ready, and the financial package is nearing completion.

The vision is to finish by 2027, after 36 months of construction work, so that water is finally flowing in all the capital’s taps.
