Cameroon: CFAF 216 BN to rebuild Ngaoundéré-Garoua road

Cameroon and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have taken their cooperation to a new level. On Wednesday  March 19th 2025 in Yaoundé, the two parties signed two financing agreements worth CFAF 216 billion.

The funding is earmarked for the reconstruction of the Ngaoundéré-Garoua trunk road, a 242-kilometre stretch of road. This funding should also enable the rehabilitation of roads serving agricultural basins, as well as the installation of related socio-economic infrastructure. These developments are designed to promote economic inclusion, create employment opportunities for young people and women, and optimise the agro-pastoral and commercial potential of the areas concerned.

Part of the fourth phase of the Transport Sector Support Programme (PAST), whose implementation period runs from January 1st 2025 to 31 December 2030, reconstruction work on the Ngaoundéré-Garoua road is due to start in April 2025, according to the Cameroonian authorities.

The idea is to strengthen sub-regional integration while ensuring greater economic inclusion and providing more job opportunities for the beneficiaries, particularly young people and women. With an estimated total cost of FCFA 221.6 billion, the AfDB’s support for this project represents 97%. The State of Cameroon has to bear only 3% of the counterpart funds, i.e. just over 5 billion FCFA.
