Cameroon: Two footbridges inaugurated on the Yaoundé-Nsimalen motorway

Two pedestrian bridges on the Yaoundé-Nsimalen motorway were inaugurated on Tuesday 18 February 2025 by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development. Built on the Yaoundé-Nsimalen motorway, the two footbridges are intended to re-establish the interconnection between communities and ensure the safety of the local population.

The ceremony to inaugurate the footbridges was attended by a number of leading figures from Mfoundi, Mefou and Afamba. The local population also turned out in large numbers to express their gratitude to the State for the construction of these important works.

Since the opening to traffic of the rural section of the 10.8 km Yaoundé-Nsimalen motorway, which crosses three departments (Mefou and Afamba, Mefou and Akano, Mfoundi), local residents have had to contend with difficulties getting around on either side of the road, hence the construction of new footbridges. The first footbridge, 38 linear metres long, was built in the Odza High School area at a cost (including works and inspection) of 500,000,000 CFA francs, and the second, 41 linear metres long, was built on the motorway slip road giving access to the Odza neighbourhood at Borne 12, at a cost (including works and inspection) of 435,958,133 CFA francs’, we learn.

In building these two footbridges, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has set itself the objective of increasing the number of crossing areas on the section concerned, to make it easier for people to get to basic social services (schools, hospitals, etc.), to facilitate movement for people with reduced mobility, and also to reduce the number of accidents.
