Camtel mobilizes to connect public hospitals to broadband Internet

In 2020, Cameroon launched a digital plan to modernize its healthcare sector. Despite some progress, several key projects remain to be implemented, including improving connectivity, developing telemedicine and implementing computerized patient records.

As part of this partnership, the telecoms operator will provide telecoms services to health facilities through secure, redundant Internet connections, high-speed interconnections, data security solutions and access to the national datacenter.

This project is fully in line with the National Digital Health Strategic Plan 2020-2024, adopted in January 2020. This program, with funding of 11.3 billion FCFA ($19.5 million) over five years, aims to digitize the healthcare system by integrating tools such as telemedicine, digital patient monitoring and electronic medical inventory management. It aims to resolve recurring difficulties in the sector, such as inaccessibility to care, delays in service delivery and poor digital coverage of health facilities.

However, four years after the launch of the strategy, some hospitals are still slow to adopt telemedicine, while others are struggling to implement the computerized patient file, a key element in the modernization of the sector.
