
CEMAC: Bank Lending up 10.6% IN Q3ᵉ 2024
In the latest edition of its ‘Economic and Statistical Bulletin’, published on February 20th 2025, the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) notes an upturn in bank financing of the economy at the end of September 2024. In fact, according to the joint issuing institution for the Cemac countries (Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Chad and CAR), the 3ᵉ quarter of 2024 was marked by an increase in loans, which rose from CFAF 10,837.7 billion to CFAF 11,983.9 billion, an increase of 10.6% year-on-year.
‘This growth was mainly driven by bank lending to the private non-financial sector, which contributed 10.5 percentage points’, emphasised the central bank, revealing the dynamism observed over the period in the private sector. Among the main beneficiaries of bank lending to businesses at end-September 2024, the BEAC cites agro-industries, telecoms operators, wholesalers, etc., among others.
‘An analysis of bank lending by maturity reveals an overall increase in medium-term loans (+12.4% with a contribution of 5.5 points), short-term loans (+8.9% with a contribution of 5.0 points) and long-term loans (+1% with a marginal contribution of 0.1 point)’, reads the BEAC document.
