CEMAC: New coins denounced before put into circulation

The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) has warned against the circulation of false images of new coins on social networks.

The images, which claim to show 150 FCFA and 350 FCFA coins, have been described as ‘gross manipulation’ by Governor Yvon Sana Bangui. BEAC points out that any official information on the new coins will be communicated via its institutional channels.

The introduction of these new coins, scheduled for the beginning of April 2025, is intended to solve the recurring problem of the lack of small change in the region. New features include a 200 FCFA coin, inspired by the old 50 FCFA coin from the 1960s, and technical modifications to limit illicit trafficking.
