China: South African lawyers conquer the Chinese market
South Africa consolidates its position in the lucrative Chinese avocado market with a new shipment to Shanghai. This export follows the phytosanitary agreement signed in August 2023 between the two countries, which enabled 21 tonnes of South African avocados to be shipped in October 2024.
The potential is considerable: China imports 50,000 tonnes of avocados every year, a market growing by 30% a year. South African producers, who benefit from an opposite season to that in the northern hemisphere, can thus supply the Chinese market during the winter months.
This commercial breakthrough illustrates the strengthening of agricultural exchanges between Africa and China. It also opens up promising prospects for other South African products, as Beijing seeks to diversify its food supply sources.
