Energy: US withdraws from energy partnership with South Africa
The United States is withdrawing from the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with South Africa, an agreement signed at COP26 in 2021. Washington is thus abandoning its commitment of $1 billion in loans and $56 million in grants, as part of its policy of disengaging from international climate agreements.
Despite this withdrawal, South Africa remains determined to pursue its energy transition. The country, which relies on coal for 80% of its electricity, estimates that it needs 80 billion dollars to achieve its targets by 2027. Other partners, including France, the UK and Germany, are maintaining their financial commitments.
At the same time, private American investment is continuing, as demonstrated by Microsoft’s announcement to invest $300 million in the development of artificial intelligence and data centres in South Africa
