Gabon: strategic break with the EU over fishing agreements

Gabon: strategic break with the EU over fishing agreements

Gabon  decides to terminate its fishing agreement with the European Union, in force since 2007, on the grounds that the financial compensation (around 15% of the sector’s current GDP) did not reflect the real value of the resources harvested.

This decision is part of a drive to better control and develop its fisheries resources.

The Gabonese government, led by President Brice Oligui Nguema, now wishes to renegotiate the terms of this cooperation or find new partners. This move comes with a clear objective: significantly increase the contribution of fishing to the national GDP by 2026.

This decision could mark a turning point in the management of Gabon’s natural resources, aligned with a more sovereign and ambitious economic strategy.
