Ghana: Government looks for solutions after USAID freeze

The suspension of US Agency for international devt USAID by the Trump administration for 90 days deprives Ghana of $156 million in aid, including $78 million earmarked for health.

The consequences: threats to malaria prevention, the fight against HIV/AIDS and access to antiretrovirals for 18,000 new people infected by 2024.

Faced with this crisis, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the Minister of Finance to find alternative solutions. At the same time, he announced the creation of a National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee to identify reforms and clean up the budget.

With 330,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and a difficult economic context, Ghana is trying to *reduce its dependence on international aid while avoiding a health crisis.
