Kenya Airways: return to profit after more than ten years of losses.
Kenya Airways is finally returning to profit, for the first time since 2012. Rescued on several occasions by the State, the Kenyan airline has posted a sharp improvement in its results, boosted by effective restructuring and an increase in ticket sales.
Among the measures put in place, network optimisation has enabled some unprofitable routes, such as Mogadishu, to be abandoned in favour of more flights to strategic destinations such as London and New York. Fleet rationalisation has also played a key role, with older aircraft being replaced by more fuel-efficient models. Another positive factor is the appreciation of the Kenyan shilling against the dollar, which has helped to reduce some of the airline’s costs.
Despite these advances, Kenya Airways is still weakened by a large debt. The Kenyan government, which has already injected several financial aid packages, released a further 150 million dollars last January. The aim is to stabilise the company pending privatisation, which is struggling to materialise despite discussions with investors, notably an American company.
