Senegal: 731,000 TONof groundnuts expected for 2024/2025crop year

Senegal’s peanut production is forecast at 731,000 tonnes for the 2024/2025 season, down 54% on the previous year. This drop is due to a shortage of rainfall between August and September 2024.

731,000 tonnes is the peanut production expected for the 2024/2025 season in Senegal. These are the findings of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its latest report on the Senegalese oilseed market, published on June 30, 2025. This figure represents a drop of 54% compared with the 2023/2024 season.

According to Senegal’s Cadre de Concertation des Producteurs Agricoles (CCPA), this drop is due to a shortage of rainfall at a crucial time in production, between August and September 2024. Other players in the sector pointed to the “poor quality” of the seeds and fertilizers used. In addition, the area cultivated and harvested fell by 35.4% year-on-year, to 810,000 hectares, according to the USDA.

The West African country of Senegal is Africa’s 3rd largest groundnut producer, after Nigeria and Sudan. It is the leading source of foreign currency for the agricultural sector, and is expected to record a 32% drop in average yield to 0.9 tonnes per hectare.
