Senegal: Major breakthrough in oil exports
Senegal reaches a key milestone in its energy development with the record sale of 3.8 million barrels of crude oil in April 2025. This performance comes from the offshore Sangomar field, located 100 km offshore Dakar, and operated by Australian company Woodside Energy.
Since its launch in June 2024, the Sangomar project has demonstrated impressive production capacity, targeting an annual extraction of 30.53 million barrels.
This ramp-up strengthens Senegal’s position on the international oil market and contributes to increasing national reserves.
At the same time, the Grand Tortue Ahmevim (GTA) gas project, developed in partnership with BP and Kosmos Energy, marked a significant step forward with the loading of its first cargo of oil.
first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG), 163,259 cubic meters, on April 15th, 2025. These initiatives illustrate Senegal’s determination to diversify its energy resources and optimize its revenues from the extractive sector.
The Senegalese government, under the leadership of President Bassirou Diomave Faye, is considering renegotiating certain oil contracts in order to maximize the economic benefits for the country. This strategy aims to ensure a better redistribution of profits and strengthen national infrastructures.
With these advances, Senegal is establishing itself as a key player in the West African energy market, paving the way for sustainable growth and greater energy independence.
