SONAMINES: Cameroon opts for marble to strengthen its mining sector
Cameroon has taken a new step in the development of its mining resources. National Mining Company (Sonamines) has acquired a stake in Quarrycam, a subsidiary of Cimenteries du Cameroun (Cimencam), to exploit two marble deposits in the north of the country.
This operation, which complies with the 2023 Mining Code, is designed to strengthen the State’s stake in mining projects and maximise the economic benefits.
The Biou Sud and Bidzar Block B deposits represent total reserves of 101.9 million tonnes of marble. Cimencam plans to extract 1.727 million tonnes a year for the production of clinker, an essential component of cement. Mining is expected to last 80 years at Biou Sud and 25 years at Bidzar.
Thanks to this stake, the Cameroonian state will receive dividends and benefit from a share of production from the first commercial extraction. A winning strategy for developing the country’s natural resources and stimulating the local economy.
