South Africa welcomes integration of the African Union into the G20
South Africa, which holds the G20 presidency this year, highlighted ‘the importance of integrating the African Union (AU) into the organisation’ at an informal meeting in New York on Monday.
The South African representative, Zane Dangor, stressed that this step forward would enable Africa’s voice to be amplified in global economic governance and the continent’s priorities to be firmly anchored on the G20 agenda.
With this integration, Africa now has institutional representation in a group that accounts for 85% of the world economy, 75% of international trade and 67% of the world’s population. Pretoria hopes that this participation will ensure that African challenges are better taken into account, particularly in terms of sustainable development, equality and economic solidarity.
