Trump imposes 25% tariffs on foreign cars from April 2nd
Donald Trump announces 25% tariffs on vehicles imported into the United States will come into force on April 2nd 2025.
This protectionist measure, signed in an executive proclamation at the White House, aims to favour local production and reduce dependence on imports. To date, tariffs on foreign automobiles have been 2.5%.
These tariffs will apply to passenger cars, light trucks and imported auto parts, including engines, transmissions and electrical components.
However, parts that comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (U.S.-Canada) will remain exempt temporarily, pending consultations with customs authorities. This decision is already causing tensions: Canada is considering retaliation and Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced the creation of a C$2 billion ‘emergency fund’ to protect the country’s automotive industry.
