West Africa: Castel Expands And Acquires Guiness Ghana

The Castel group is continuing its African expansion by acquiring 80.4% of Guinness Ghana from the British giant Diageo, for 81 million euros. With this acquisition, Castel takes control of two large breweries in Accra and Kumasi, which supply 30% of the beer consumed in Ghana.

Diageo, which is experiencing difficulties on the Chinese and American markets, will nevertheless retain the Guinness brand, while selling off its Ghanaian infrastructure. The deal concerns 500 direct jobs, 40,000 indirect jobs and 30,000 farmers producing sorghum and maize for the local Guinness recipe.

If the competition authority approves the transaction, Ghana will become the 22nd African country in which Castel operates, after Cameroon in 2022. Despite this expansion, the group remains absent from Nigeria and South Africa, where its rival AB InBev reigns supreme.
