Zimbabwe applies for BRICS membership

Zimbabwe has officially applied to join the BRICS, its foreign minister, Amon Murwira, announced at a press conference in Moscow.

Harare justifies its application by its desire to join an economic platform based on mutual respect and sovereign equality. The country is now awaiting a response from the BRICS, which since January 1st 2025 has included 19 members representing 51% of the world’s population and 40% of global GDP.

This initiative is part of the BRICS’ strategy of opening up to the countries of the South, with the aim of strengthening their influence vis-à-vis the Western blocs.
