Gabon: the end of raw manganese exports in 2029

Gabon, the world’s 2nd largest producer of manganese, is turning a historic page by banning the export of its raw ore from 2029. The aim of this decision is to develop a local processing industry, creating added value and jobs.

The government has given operators such as France’s Eramet (15% of world production) 3 years to adapt their investments. At the same time, energy projects (a 600 MW hydroelectric dam) are being studied to support this industrialization.

This strategic shift could boost tax revenues and reduce dependence on raw exports, but will require major investment in infrastructure and training.
