China: foreign trade shows moderate growth in 1st quarter

China’s trade recorded a 1.3% year-on-year increase in the first quarter of 2024, according to customs data released on April 14th.

Exports rose by 6.9% to 6,130 billion yuan (850 billion USD), driven by foreign demand. Conversely, imports fell by 6% to 4,170 billion yuan, reflecting still timid domestic consumption.

This contrasting performance underlines the gradual recovery of Chinese trade in a still uncertain global economic context. Analysts are now keeping a close eye on these indicators for the 2nd quarter.
